PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
FOR EDUCATORS
Springer's professional development programs are designed to provide a range of flexible options to suit the needs and initiatives of each school or district. Trainings provide:
- On-site consultation and observation
- Tailored instruction for individual schools - onsite or at the Center
- Proven strategies to help students overcome obstacles of learning
- Research-based tools to improve a child's academic success
Springer's professional development is designed for diverse audiences:
- Elementary & Middle School Teachers and School Administrators
- Counselors and School Psychologists
- Intervention and Language Therapists
Our ultimate goal is to give teachers the tools necessary to become more diagnostic-prescriptive in working with the children whose lives they touch throughout their teaching careers. Empowering teachers with the strategies necessary to meet the intense needs of the children in their classes will directly impact how information is processed, stored, and accessed for future use.
CURRENT PROGRAMS
Are your students struggling to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in reading? Would you like to gain greater confidence in supporting your students who struggle to meet Academic Content Standards? Springer can help!
Learning to Read (K-3): Best Practice Methodology for Reading Success
The National Reading Panel recommends direct instruction that is systematic and multi-sensory as the best way to teach reading. These core components are the foundation of this class. Students who struggle the most in reading make improvements when they are taught the big picture of reading using a step-by-step manner that includes multi-sensory pathways.
In this class, participants will:
- Review state Benchmarks and Indicators in Reading: Phonemic Awareness, Word Recognition, Fluency and Comprehension
- Learn strategic interventions that support student achievement of those Benchmarks and Indicators.
- Learn how to use curriculum-based assessment to make instructional decisions.
- Develop intervention plans for your own students.
- Engage in supervised lesson planning and practice that will support student AYP.
- Develop strategies that align with the three tiers of Response to Intervention (RTI).
Date: June 16 - 20, 2008
Time: 8:30 am - 3:00 pm daily
This comprehensive workshop includes:
- Springer Strategy Guide
- Language Soundcards and Manual
- Multi-sensory Toolkit
Participants can choose to obtain two university credits for this five-day professional development course.
Reading to Learn (Grades 4-8): Integrating “How to Learn” into Standards-Based Reading Instruction
Curriculum maps (with Benchmarks and Indicators) dictate what is to be taught, but it is the teacher, equipped with the knowledge of his or her students, who selects the best methods for teaching those standards. Integrating methods to teach students how to learn information is as important as teaching the content itself.
In this class, participants will:
- Review state Benchmarks and Indicators in Reading: Reading Process, Reading Applications and Acquisition of Vocabulary.
- Explore ways to teach Benchmarks and Indicators to meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Engage in task analysis activities to reinforce core steps required in mastering concepts and skills.
- Design lessons that teach students “how to learn” while delivering content.
Date: June 24-26, 2008
Time: 8:30 am - 3:00 pm daily
This dynamic workshop includes a Springer Strategy Guide.
Participants can choose to obtain one university credit for this three-day professional development course.
SPRINGER BRINGS TRAINING TO YOUR SCHOOL:
Specialized, affordable, professional development training,
tailored to the current needs of your teachers and students.
Finding meaningful professional development is an important goal of administrative teams, but not always an easy task. Springer School and Center can help you achieve this goal by providing affordable and dynamic, research-based training, directly to your school or district.
Springer specializes in providing professional development training to elementary, middle and high school teachers. Public, private and independent schools have benefited from our expertise over the years. We have worked with hundreds of teachers in the Greater Cincinnati area and beyond. In the 2006-2007 school year, we also began working at the university level. As a result of the training, teacher candidates will enter their teaching careers with research-based techniques and strategies to improve learning for the at-risk students in their classrooms. Springer also entered into its second full year of work with the teachers and administration of Preble County. Teachers report that using a systematic, multisensory approach benefits all children, not just those who struggle.

The following is a list of programs that can be brought to YOUR school:
The Multisensory Reading Teacher
This program provides valuable resources for improving reading concept development.
Key learning:
- Research supports the use of a multisensory, systematic, direct-concept instructional approach with students struggling to break the reading code.
- Early intervention significantly increases a child’s chance of reaching grade level reading goals by grade 6.
- The reading teacher/tutor must use a prescribed, consistent, and systematic program, which directly teaches concepts in phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, written language and comprehension.
- Assessment of all major components of the reading program will aid the reading teacher/tutor in discovery of breakdown points.
Hands-On Strategies to Active Learning
Are you looking for ways to engage all students in the learning process? This course will provide hands-on strategies to assist with processing and organizing information for greater retention and use.
Key learning:
- Strategies to help students process and organize information.
- Hands-on language activities to build understanding.
- Direct teaching methods that improve learning and retention.
The ADHD Child In Your Classroom
Understanding the complexities of the child with attentional difficulties is critical for success in school. In this class, participants assess problematic behaviors, pinpoint learning breakdowns, and determine the best practices in working with this diverse group of children.
Key learning:
- Understanding which strategies or interventions to put into place becomes more apparent when the teacher has a clear understanding of the child’s learning profile.
- The attention system of learning consists of controls that regulate mental energy, information processing and output or production.
- The best outcomes are evident when a partnership exists between school and home
Early Intervention for Language Development
Learn how to improve early language development and acquisition through observation, informal assessments, followed by best practice strategic interventions.
Key learning:
- Identifying the benchmarks of early language skills
- Understanding the implementation and value of early skills assessments
- Using appropriate strategic interventions for PreK-3 students with weak language processing and production
Comprehension Through Active Reading Instruction: Teaching Children to be Strategic Readers
Directly teaching active reading skills is critical. A teacher’s ability to assess a child’s listening and reading comprehension skills can make the difference between success and failure in school.
Key learning:
- Participants learn to teach strategies to deliver direct reading comprehension instruction in language arts
- Participants learn to teach strategies for enhancing reading comprehension in content areas
- Participants learn to develop instructional interventions for comprehension remediation
Math in the Elementary and Middle Years
Concept development is critical if a student is to move from the concrete to the abstract in math understanding and usage.
Key learning:
- Understanding the impact of the “big 4” learning constructs that impact math, will be instrumental in discovery of mathematic breakdown points.
- Strategic instruction is a valuable tool in teaching mathematic concepts at all levels. Learning how to develop strategies, using the grasping hierarchy, will directly assist struggling learners.
Really Learning! Teaching the Way Children Learn Best
Understanding where learning breakdowns occur is essential for each child’s academic success. Having an understanding of how learning occurs, or the systems of learning, will give teachers a method for make the classroom a place for real learning.
Key learning:
- Understanding a framework for learning will enable the educator to be more diagnostic, in order to help students understand themselves and the way they learn best.
- The eight constructs of learning are connected. Pinpointing where breakdowns in learning occur, gives the educator a starting point to infuse strategies and interventions.
- Making students aware of their strengths and affinities, and leveraging them against areas of weakness will empower greater academic success.
