News & Views is a semiannual publication of Springer School and Center. The newsletter is published in the winter and summer of each year, and it features news pertaining to Springer's Board of Trustees and activities in Springer's Day School and Center.
In this installation of our ongoing series highlighting the programs and services that make Springer School and Center an outstanding community resource, we turn our focus to the Music Department, headed by Judy McMahon.
As part of Springer's curriculum, every student attends music class once a week. Classes are taught in group settings and allow for many different styles of learning. Mrs. McMahon applies many of the same strategies as students' classroom teachers. For example, lessons are presented in visual, auditory, and hands-on styles, allowing each student to learn in the way that best suits her/his style. Classes are also arranged into developmentally appropriate lessons. This means that Primary students are given a basic introduction to musical styles, musicians, and instruments, while Upper School students might study music theory, individual composers, and learn to play specific instruments.
