Adventures in Summer Learning

Adventures in Summer Learning helps students learn important strategies for improving academic skills and increasing self-esteem. In addition to offering highly regarded academic courses and our Fun With Friends afternoon program, this year we're excited to offer mini-camp options, independent or in combination with Fun With Friends, that provide engaging activities sure to appeal to a wide variety of interests.

Morning Expeditions (grades 1-5)

Morning Expeditions

June 13 - July 15, 2022 (Closed June 20, July 1, July 4)

8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Cost: $1,900

Our five-week Morning Expedition program is designed with your child in mind. Leveraging the expertise that has made Springer a leader in educating struggling students, our summer program helps participants gain skills and confidence through carefully researched methods of instruction for reading fluency, comprehension, writing, mathematics and problem solving while also providing opportunities for social interactions, recreation, new experiences and fun. 

This morning program can be accompanied by our afternoon program “Fun with Friends.”

Expedition Features:

  • An evidence-based structured literacy approach to reading, will be provided to all 1st-5th graders.
  • 4th and 5th graders will receive a highly structured reading instruction.
  • A non-diagnostic dyslexia screening will be completed for all registrants and results will be available to parents during conferences.

Please note: If registering for the Morning Expeditions program, a Teacher Information Form will be requested to assist with placement and instruction decisions (not required for current Springer students)

Fun with Friends (grades 1-5)

Fun with Friends

To extend their day, our Morning Expeditions participants have the opportunity to enroll in our afternoon Fun with Friends program. This fun-filled afternoon allows students to enjoy a variety of enrichment activities and includes arts & crafts, indoor & outdoor games and activities, musical exploration and more.

Participants must be enrolled in Morning Expeditions in order to register for Fun with Friends.

Social Skills (grades 1-3)

In our Social Skills course, students will learn to set goals for themselves and build positive relationships with peers. Students will also have the opportunity todevelop self-awareness and emotional management skills, along with effective peer communication.

A parent information class will be offered the evening of July 14th, 6:30-8:00 pm. Connect with your child's social skills counselor, Rachel Eccles, LPCC-S (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with Supervision Designation), and gain insight into  the skills and strategies your child has learned.

Study Skills (grades 6-8)

June 13-24 (Closed June 20th in observance of Juneteenth)

10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Cost: $500

All students benefit from learning study skills and strategies as they progress through school. From organizing time & materials to self-advocating for support, or just knowing how to take effective notes, Springer's Study Skills course is designed to help students learn to study more effectively and develop the skills necessary for academic and life success. During this nine-day course, students will learn valuable skills to help them navigate junior high, high school and beyond.

Math Essentials (grades 6-8)

June 13 - 24

1 - 3 p.m.

Cost: $500

Our Math Essentials course has been designed to help middle schoolers develop skills and self-confidence in math through projects and activities that allow them to gain mastery over critical thinking concepts. Our goal is to encourage students to connect with math concepts on a deeper, real-life level, in a fun and engaging way. Projects will include 3D geometric constructions, learning to measure and use fractions, solving puzzles and word problems, engaging in critical thinking games, and more!

Improving Writing (grades 6-8)

July 5-15

1 - 3 p.m.

Cost: $500

This course will focus on the various steps of the writing process, including brainstorming/idea development, selecting appropriate organizational strategies, outlining, and revising/editing a rough draft in order to produce a polished final product. Course overview will include a brief review of grammatical principles, including correcting common sentence errors. Students will learn to write focused, purposefully developed expository or narrative paragraphs.

Family members will have the opportunity to experience and enjoy their child's final writing achievements during the Summer Writers Showcase on July 15th, 2:00-3:00.


Mini-Camps

Students entering grades 1-5

Are you hoping to add some fun to your child's summer? Look no further, Springer has the answer to all your summer fun goals! We are excited to be introducing mini-camps to our Adventures in Summer Learning course options. Each mini-camp is designed to help your child build confidence, discover strengths and learn new skills. Best of all, you can take advantage of a different mini-camp each week! These 4-day courses are offered each week throughout the 5-week schedule and can be added to multiple combinations of courses.

Gardening Basics

June 14-17

Ready to enjoy the sunshine? Join Springer's own Master Gardener and Civic Garden Center's "Growing Our Teacher" program and learn about gardening basics. Campers will enjoy daily hands-on activities, create projects to take home, and of course get their hands in the dirt.

Chess

June 14-17

This class will teach students the basics of chess. Along with learning game fundamentals and working on improving concentration and strategic thinking, students will learn how to quickly make decisions, evaluate alternatives, and multiple ways to win through guided instruction. Sponsored by: Cincinnati Chess Club.

Kids in the Kitchen

June 21-24

Join us for fun-filled days in the kitchen! Participants will have the opportunity to make their own kid-friendly recipes while learning the basics of cooking. Sign up now to help your child learn lifelong skills, encourage trying new foods, develop problem-solving skills and build self-esteem.

LEGO

Scrapbook Journaling

3D Sculpture

For the child who likes to build, create and imagine on a big scale, our 3D sculpture class is sure to be a hit. This class will teach the basics of sculpture, from visualizing ideas to creating their own work of art. Participants will work with a variety of materials and process related to making 3D forms.

Ceramics

Pottery crafts are a way for kids to wrap their hands around a 3-dimensional project. In our ceramics class, your child will learn coiling, slab, and pinching techniques that can be used to make their own project like bowls and cups, along with a world of of other 3D creations.
