Throughout the month of October, learning disabilities and ADHD were center stage as social media, news, podcasts, journals, blogs, and articles further highlighted the AWARENESS of these conditions that touch one in five individuals.
That is a startling statistic which is discussed in detail by The National Center for Learning Disabilities in a 2017 report the State of Learning Disabilities: Understanding the 1 in 5.
At Springer School and Center, we hope that spending the month shining a spotlight on ADHD, learning disabilities, and executive functioning challenges will have had a ripple effect. We want our local community to understand that Springer can support families who need information through attending one of our parent programs or calling our center for first-class support. Through center professional development programs, we want educators, speech/language, occupational, and psychological therapists to have best-practice methods and strategies to work in the most effective and efficient way with struggling students in their schools. We want every person who read or listened to any information about LD or ADHD to be more informed and to pass on valuable information.
Nationally, we want the banner of 1 in 5 to elicit funding for research. We want people to understand that 1 in 5 does not discriminate. No demographic is immune, and it is genetic. Through knowledge and greater understanding, more children and adults will get tested and be on a trajectory to finding support. Not having a diagnosis can mean being untreated and underserved. Research indicates untreated disabilities can lead to other problems such as depression, anxiety, and a host of other psychological issues.
