Treatment Guidelines for Children with ADHD

Getting access to high quality mental health and behavioral services is a challenge for most people, especially at present. Springer School and Center, in an effort to provide high quality information to parents, has partnered for many years with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and its Center for ADHD to bring experts in the area of ADHD and LD to our region. This year, we are hosting a virtual webinar with Dr. David Anderson of The Child Mind Institute. ADHD is challenging for children and families. School, parents, school counselors, psychologists and  pediatricians working together can influence the future for students with this diagnosis. It is estimated that roughly 10 percent of children in the U.S. have been diagnosed with ADHD (according to a 2016 survey). About two-thirds of those children were on medication according to the AAP; 25 percent received no treatment. For most students, treatments are not maintained long-term, whether behavioral strategies at home, family counseling, support plans at school or medical intervention. 

We know that children diagnosed with ADHD are at risk for lower academic achievement, dropping out of school, depression, anxiety and defiant behavior at home and school. In later years, they are at risk for imprisonment, substance abuse and  a shortened lifespan due to accidents – especially with a motor vehicle. ADHD persists into adulthood, creating new challenges throughout their lives.
