Being Direct and Genuine: Why Sarcasm Undermines Learning

Celebrate the Climb - Appreciation Matters!
Appreciation is a powerful force. It reminds children that who they are and how they try matters, not just the final outcome. When students feel genuinely appreciated, they are more likely to take risks, persevere through challenges and develop confidence in their own abilities.

In a school setting, appreciation builds a culture of belonging. Celebrating students’ efforts sends a clear message that learning is a process. Growth happens through practice, mistakes, persistence and courage. When we notice a student’s hard work, improvement, kindness or determination, we reinforce the idea that effort is something to be proud of. This kind of recognition helps students see themselves as capable learners who can keep moving forward, even when things feel difficult.
The same is true in families. When children hear appreciation at home for trying their best, sticking with a tough task or showing responsibility, they learn that their efforts are seen and valued. These moments strengthen relationships and encourage a healthy mindset about learning and growth.
On Thursday, February 12, Springer School and Center celebrated Student Appreciation Day. The annual tradition provides time to pause and intentionally celebrate students’ everyday efforts - and eat ice cream sundaes! It is about honoring progress, resilience and commitment, and reminding students that their efforts truly matter.
