From Parent to Volunteer: A Springer Journey
April is National Volunteer Month, a time to celebrate the individuals who give their time and talents to make a difference in our community. At Springer, our volunteers are an essential part of who we are. They are advocates, cheerleaders, and often, families who have experienced firsthand the life-changing impact of a Springer education.
One volunteer recently shared her story with us.

Jenni Ward and her husband Ryan at the 2022 Springer Celebration
Jenni Ward's journey with Springer began in 2015, when her son Will started school here as a second grader. Like many parents, she had been searching for the right environment - one where he could feel understood and supported. Jenni shares, "Will attended Springer from 2nd-7th grade. During those years he was consistently taught and shown how to use the strategies that worked best for him... he learned how to advocate for himself." And, Jenni's son wasn't the only person who found a place at Springer.
"I was told that Springer had a fundraiser and I was all ears. After attending the first fundraiser, A Springer Celebration, it was evident to me that this event must happen and very clear how many lives it changed."
Since that moment over 10 years ago, Jenni has shown up to Springer week after week to help plan the annual Springer Celebration. "The people I engage with at Springer really make me feel welcome and impactful," Jenni says. "Being able to give hope to other families and students is what keeps me coming back." From helping to secure auction items to lending her creativity to design invitations, Jenni is an invaluable part of the Springer Celebration* team.
To Jenni, even the small moments make a difference. "It makes me smile when I see students in the hallways... It makes my heart happy to know that they are getting what they need at Springer instead of struggling and feeling like school is impossible." These everyday moments are what make volunteering at Springer so meaningful.
Today, Jenni's son is thriving. "Will found his voice at Springer," Jenni shares. "He is confident and relentless at asking for what he needs. [He is] getting ready to go to the University of Kentucky."
Years after Will's time at Springer, Jenni continues to stay involved. “I have seen the impact [Springer] has on students and their families… I believe every student should get the chance to feel successful.”
This National Volunteer Month, we are deeply grateful for volunteers like Jenni, and for all those who give their time to support Springer’s mission. Because of you, students with learning differences build confidence, find their voice, and discover what's possible for their future. Thank you for being part of the Springer story.
